Sally said she'd sooner shoot herself than have a baby.

OLIVE awoke late and left Jerry sleeping. He needed sleep. He had been drinking the night before — she had been able to smell it on his breath — and they had argued, briefly, about the same old thing.
"Why don't you get it someplace else?" she had demanded.
"Maybe I will."
"All you think about is making me pregnant. When I'm ready to be made that way, I'll let you know."
She put the coffee on and sat down at the table. Another Saturday, another long day without any meaning. After a while, Jerry would get up and, as soon as he had his breakfast, he would mow the lawn. The coffee began to perk and she wished that it would hurry. She drank quite a lot of coffee, often as many as ten cups a day, and smoked constantly. Sally Smith did the same thing. In the country, you waited for the coming of night, and when it was night you waited for the start of a new day. If they had been living in New York, there would have been no problem about what to do. In New York there were places to go and things to see. Out here, nothing.
