a 19-year-old schoolboy told Work: “Yes sir! I think blues is wrong to sing, especially for a Christian. No folks around here who calls themselves Christians sing the blues. Dancing is all right if it’s just a sociable thing, but it ain’t right if it’s like at the juke.” Work considered that this meant group dancing such as round and square dancing being acceptable, but not close dancing by couples such as the slow drag, which was popular at the jukes. Work also stated that “Muddy Water,” who had recently been discovered by Work and his co-workers, “would like to join the church, but to do so would mean abandoning his guitar—a sacrifice too dear to make now.” Some forms of secular music were acceptable. For example, much popular written music was considered respectable, but the blues had become associated with brothels and jukes and was therefore considered wicked.
