they were all living in this apartment as if it were a besieged fort. They were at war with the entire black underworld. It wasn't just their old enemies now. Lupo had friends. An open contract was out on all their heads. Everybody wanted to be in on the toppling of the tyro king, the heir of Harry Brown. Everyone in Harlem wanted a piece of the action. Threats were coming at him in the meanest ways. Crippled old women came to the downstairs with packages of shit. Joe the doorman received vicious letters, to be given to him. Ossie had changed the phone number twice, yet the phone still rang with unwanted and obscene callers. It was as if the C.C. Riders and all their lesser kin had an open line to the inner workings of the phone company.
