The "heroes" in Thompson's fiction are those generally discarded by literature and the crime-fiction genre: itinerant roughnecks, downtrodden salesman, grifters down on their luck looking for that elusive big break, ingratiating hotel bellboys and dodgy, conniving businessmen.
