The
highlight is "Incident on Avenue P" about the 1972 "Dog Day
Afternoon" case. John Wojtowicz was quite a piece of work. A Vietnam vet,
he was gay, recently divorced, unemployed, and convinced he was dying of
cancer. And to top it all off, his boyfriend was badgering him for to fund a
sex change operation. Wojtowicz decided crime was the answer. With two
inexperienced accomplices, he inaugurated his criminal career by holding up the
Bensonhurst branch of Chase Manhattan Bank. Things don't go according to plan.
Within minutes they found themselves with nine hostages, trapped in a bank surrounded
by 50 million cops, reporters, and spectators. After a 12 hour standoff, during
which John answered the phone and talked to cops, reporters, relatives, and
cranks (one repeat caller kept advising him to "Kill them all"), the
cops lured them out with the promise of a plane at JFK. The police thoughtfully
provided John & the crew with a limousine, complete with FBI agent for a
chauffeur. The drive to JFK was uneventful. And there it was, the promised
plane, all ready to go. Unfortunately, this sight made John and accomplice Sal
Naturile relax just enough for the driver to pull out a carefully hidden gun
and blow Sal away while agents outside grabbed John.

She starts off by trying to refute the Kinsey
fueled perception that "everyone's doing it". The whole stance of the
book is based on hardcore mythical middle class values which are assumed to be
chisled in stone. The middle class values chastity, the middle class is successful,
the middleclass is good, therefore chastity is necessary to be both good &
successful. The lower classes, with their distinctly animalistic sexual
practices which force them to accept un-American government handouts, are discussed
only with a sense of distaste. Is sex natural? Of course, but "it is not
to say that just because we are mammalian we should therefore act like animals".
Is it fun? Pre-maritally, ''It's not fun if you don't enjoy it". Several
horror stories about the sad & lonely lives of the sexually fulfilled come
in here. And, if you are in love, having sex may cause the boy to lose his
respect for you & change his mind, making the girl feel shabby.
"Hopping into bed with every individual you feel fond of would be
ridiculous, if not downright immoral". Sexual restraint is not bad for
you, either from a physiological or psychological view. As a matter of fact, "Sublimation
is important for your development as a person". Not having sex is good for
you. In summary, "chastity is worth the struggle", not only for your
present happiness, but for your family, your future family, and indeed the
future of American democracy. Loose morals are for declining decaying
civilization, not for a robust country like the US of A.
